Artist’s Statement
I loved the simple beauty of my color palette when I was blending colors together to paint landscapes. My just colors collection was inspired by that observation. Instead of painting from a palette onto a canvas, I predominantly use the canvas itself as the palette. I find it exciting to see the unique and unexpected effects that emerge with each new piece.
With a paintbrush in hand, I seem to never tire. The gentle shade variations are peaceful and soothing. The bold, bright colors are rejuvenating. The sun often rises before I realize the whole night has vanished. I hope that my artwork stirs your emotions, lifts your spirits, and inspires you to reach new heights.
My name is Marlene Sanaye Yamada. Carrying on my mother’s tradition of signing artwork by her middle name, you’ll find “Sanaye” as the signature on each painting and drawing.
Sanaye is pronounced sah-nah-yeh. The meaning in Japanese is the first, strongest and thus most premium sprout to break through the surface in a crop. I value the symbolism of Sanaye and strive to do the name justice.
